Last week, City Year Chicago hit the road and headed out of the city for it’s annual Basic Training Retreat at the lovely YMCA Camp Grenada Duncan!

Basic Training Retreat is a three-day event that takes place right during the heart of the corps’ Basic Training Academy and serves as an excellent time for the corps and leadership to take a step back, reflect, and re-orientate themselves around our service.
The major theme of the retreat has always been diversity and inclusion and this year was no exception. The fabulous Bea Young & Associates again facilitated our discussion around topics such as race, class, privilege, and cultural misunderstandings with a mixture of activities and role-playing that illuminated these issues for our corps and provoked many insightful discussions.
Now, as we all know, all work and no play makes the corps dull, so mixed into the various learning and development sessions, the corps had a number of opportuinties to strenghten relationships both on their school teams and the larger corps by participating in a wide range of activities. From boating, to a rope’s challenge coarse, to games of good ol’ four square, we all had a blast learning and laughing our way through camp!
