On Thursday, June 16, 2011 City Year Chicago graduated one of its largest corps of young leaders, who spent more than 212,000 as tutors and mentors to Chicago Public Schools students.
During the ceremony, special guests like City Year Chicago Board Member Ken Porrello of Deloitte, Bethune School of Excellence Principal Zipporah Hightower and Robeson High School Principal Gerald Morrow praised the corps for providing more than 82,000 hours of in-class tutoring and nearly14,000 hours of student support during after school programming which extended the school day students. Collectively, City Year Chicago corps members reached nearly 7,000 students in 13 schools on the south and west side of Chicago.
Corps member Alisha Ranadive was selected by her peers to receive the Alter Group Corps Member of the Year Award for her work at the Sherman School of Excellence. In addition, Senior Corps Member Katherine Liao was selected to receive the Comcast Leadership Award for her outstanding leadership in integrating the service model across all 13 schools, which was awarded by LeAnn Talbot of Comcast.
