Monday Montages usually mean we’ve got a slide show in store for our readers, but today we’re going to shake it up a bit and send a shout out to a great non-profit that provided a FREE grant writing workshop for our CYCHI corps members.

Urban Needs In Teaching (UNITE) is a nation-wide non-profit dedicated to supporting teachers working in urban school settings.
Urban Needs In Teacher Education (UNITE) is a non-profit organization focusing on preparing and supporting urban teacher candidates throughout the nation. Working with universities, school districts and community based organizations, UNITE hopes to create a dedicated and cohesive network of urban educators that will have a positive and lasting impact on our city public school systems and the students they serve.
On March 17th, 2011, several UNITE student teachers and City Year Corps members gathered together to learn about the grant writing process. Teachers wishing to go outside of the budget allotted to them by their schools must find inventive ways to support and fund extra class projects and materials. Given the recent budget cuts in many urban districts, it is important for teachers to be able to access resources outside their school and find funding. A great way to find funding for classroom materials and projects is by writing grants.

City Year Chicago Corps members listen as members of UNITE discuss the ins and outs of writing grant proposals.
Chase James, a teacher at Collins and supporter of the City Year Chicago team serving at the school, spearheaded the event. Katie Hallberg, history teacher at Collins Academy High School, met with the ambitious group of teachers and corps members and lead the workshop on the basics of finding and writing grants. A big thanks to Daniel Wascho, another teacher who volunteered his time to assist the participants in the workshop, and lastly to Collins Academy for providing the space.
All participants were eligible to apply for the UNITE Classroom Grant of $500 to fund projects in their own classrooms!
Thanks, UNITE, for teaching our corps members skills they can use long after they’ve finished their City Year.
